Careers Evening: On Thursday 16th of November, we went to the St.Gerard’s Junior School Hall to attend the Careers Evening. I visited the I.T. Consultant, John Fallon, a Trinity College Scientist student, Cillian Murray and finally a computer science student attending Maynooth University in Co. Kildare. The evening broadened my knowledge on the range of courses to do in college and what careers to do.

Martial Arts was a two-day programme held in Gerard's where we were given an insight to self defence and where and when to use it. The programme was led by a local from Bray who is a professional in tai-kwan-do and martial arts in general. He teaches in other schools about self defense all over Ireland.
On the first day our year group were brought into the halla nua for a presentation. We were told about how being aware in a situation is essential to avoiding fights and defusing aggression in dire situations. He taught us about keeping relaxed but always aware and never using unnescessary violence. Our year group then went down to the sports hall to engage in physical activity. We were taught how to properly attack and efend without harming yourself. He also taught us how to get out of a situation where you're being held. Over the two day course I learnt more about how defence, reacting properly in a drastic situation and using necessary force can prevent yourself from being injured or even possibly dying. It was the best activity I did in the 1st term of 4th year. Kairos was a one day course where I, along with my form, 4B, learnt how to use a television studio and created our own 15-minute programme.
We travelled by bus down to Maynooth, Co. Kildare and arrived at 9:30. We met Darren, who would be our supervisor for the day. Everyone was given roles for the day. My role was to be the visual mixer, which is in other words the one who edits the show from start to finish by transitioning to and from scenes giving order to the show. Our show was a "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!" type of show, where people in my form dressed up as famous actors which was unique because previous groups had never attempted anything close to this. Time was of the essence as we needed many takes to get the show right. I, along with the director and the graphic designer, were perched in a small room outisde the studio analysing the entire show. The sound men were also in an isolated room with only a small screen to look at in order to understand what was going on. We were given small breaks and by 1:30 we had to get 2 takes done and finish up in order to get home. On the final take the show went perfectly and the end result was impressive. I learnt that working on a studio set is a challenging and great experience and I hope I can work on another set in the future. |
